In this so-called ‘post-truth/fake news’ era the need for parents to possess keen Critical Thinking skills are more necessary than ever before. Critical Thinking can help to moderate the excessive concern and stress parents experience from the instantaneous, ever-present, and often contradictory, news stories.  Consider the numerous crime and health scares that proliferate mass and social media on a daily, minute-by-minute, and second-by-second basis. In this seminar Dr Steve Hannon will explore Critical Thinking approaches that can help parents to: discern credible and trustworthy news from ‘alternative facts’, identify and analyse salient information, from the deluge of competing news stories, in this age of information overload, find proportionality when assessing ‘news’ across multi-platforms. Evaluate whether news reports are: merely hyperbole, speculative sensationalism, or misinformation, manufacturing medical and moral panics, or of real import requiring further consideration.
